School Vouchers

* Re Ronald Brownstein’s Feb. 19 National Perspective claim that “Conservatives love that idea [of private school vouchers] because they believe increased competition from private schools will force the public schools to improve”: Conservatives don’t believe any such thing; that’s just the hypocritical cover they’ve been hiding under for decades.
Diverting public money to private school vouchers won’t make public schools more competitive, it will only accelerate their deterioration and ultimate extinction as a democratic institution. That is the idea the conservatives love.
