A worker was critically injured Tuesday in a 90-foot fall from scaffolding secured to one of the Bay Bridge’s massive support towers.

James Clemons, 57, was part of a paint crew working 165 feet above San Francisco Bay when he fell.

He was lowered to the base of the tower, on the San Francisco side of Treasure Island, and taken by boat to San Francisco General Hospital. Hospital officials said he was in critical condition, with head, abdominal and pelvic injuries.

Clemons, an Oakland resident, was part of a team preparing to paint the bridge. Caltrans officials said Clemons was walking on stairs when he apparently slipped.
