Los Alamitos-Millikan Game Postponed to Today

The Division I semifinal between Los Alamitos and Long Beach Millikan scheduled for Tuesday at Millikan was postponed until today because of poor field conditions.

Before game time, officials viewed Millikan’s soccer field, then the school’s football field, the alternative site for soccer.

The officials conferred with Millikan Principal Dan Woitovich and the team’s coaches, deemed the field unplayable and decided to postpone the game.

The game will be played at an alternate site or a relined Millikan soccer field that would run east to west rather than north to south to avoid the field’s largest water accumulation.

“We walked out to each of the fields and decided not to try and play today,” official Ben McCarthy said. “There was two inches of water in the [north] penalty area of the soccer field. The goalkeeper would have to have fins out there, and the football field was even worse.”

Griffins players and coaches were disappointed by the decision.

“Our guys came ready to play,” said Los Alamitos Coach Trey Scharlin. “It came down to the officials. It’s their call.”
