Life Beyond Loss

It was interesting to read Susan Baskin’s essay about going bald during chemotherapy (“The Bald Truth,” Nov. 26). I have been through the same treatments and am fine now after a mastectomy in 1997. Losing my hair was more damaging to my feelings than having breast cancer. I would never go out of the house without covering my bald head, until one day I watered my roses in my frontyard and felt a cool breeze on my head. When I touched it, I realized that I’d forgotten to cover it up. “What the heck,” I thought, “who cares?” I knew then that I was on the way to recovery.
