An LAPD officer who pleaded no contest Monday to driving under the influence was sentenced to 20 days of community service.

Humberto Angel Najera, who was a narcotics investigator for the Los Angeles Police Department’s Van Nuys Division, was also ordered to participate in an alcohol rehabilitation program for three months.

For community service, the 27-year-old officer will collect trash or remove graffiti, said Deputy City Atty. Harvey Crespy.

The officer was driving a Nissan Sentra when he ran a red light Nov. 24 and crashed into another car at Sherman Way and Wilbur Avenue in Reseda. The other driver, a 66-year-old man, suffered minor injuries.

Najera, who was arrested after a police sergeant smelled alcohol on his breath, had a blood-alcohol level of .10%, according to police.

Since his arrest, Najera has been removed from field duties and assigned to desk work, said Sgt. John Pasquariello, a spokesman for the LAPD.

“He’s facing disciplinary actions,” Pasquariello said. “The range is a reprimand to termination.

“Any misconduct can result in termination, especially something as serious as this,” Pasquariello said.
