City to Reopen Rent Subsidy Waiting List

Share

Elderly, disabled and low-income people can apply for federal rent subsidies when the Glendale Housing Authority reopens its waiting list to residents from Tuesday to Jan. 31.

Area residents are expected to apply for the federally funded Section 8 vouchers in record numbers because of rising rents, authorities said.

Glendale last opened its waiting list for Section 8 applications to the public in 1989. Applicants will be required to mail their forms to Glendale Housing Authority, P.O. Box 93010, Industry, CA 91715-3010. Applications will not be accepted in person.

Applications can be obtained by calling (800) 824-2588, or in person at any of 12 community sites. Residents can also get an online version from Glendale’s Web site at https://www.ci.glendale.ca.us.

The city received 127 vouchers last October and is asking the Department of Housing and Urban Development for 190 more this year, said Ray Vargas, housing program administrator in Glendale’s Community Development and Housing department.

In 1989, Glendale received 6,000 applications, and according to the 1990 census the city has 20,000 to 25,000 residents who may qualify for Section 8 vouchers.

Eligibility for Section 8 assistance is determined by federal income limits. Applications will go through a lottery system and be assigned on the housing agency’s waiting list. Priority will be given to Glendale residents, military veterans, seniors, the disabled and homeless families.
