UCLA Students Warned of Recent Sexual Assaults

Share

UCLA police sent thousands of e-mails and posted hundreds of fliers Thursday on the Westwood campus, warning students to be extra careful after a female student was sexually assaulted Wednesday evening and another was threatened, apparently by the same man.

“We feel that it’s important to alert the campus community, given the nature of students,” said Nancy Greenstein, director of police community services.

“Students tend to think that the campus is a very protected and safe island in the middle of a big city.”

A campus crime bulletin, which included a rough sketch of the suspect, informed students that the first assault took place in the women’s restroom in the Schoenberg Music Building. The man hid in the restroom and surprised the student while she was at the sink.

In the second case, the man entered the women’s restroom of Boelter Hall and told a student to lie down. She persuaded him to leave.

Investigators had not made an arrest as of late Thursday. Safety officers are available to escort students from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m.
