Club Sports: Bingo and Bowl-A-Rama

Share

Supermodels and rappers cozied up to Fuel on Monday, for the Hollywood bar’s first go at Rock ‘n’ Hop Bingo, a new weekly promotion. Playing bingo to tunes by Mystikal and Shaggy, while rubbing elbows with Cypress Hill and model Josie Maran, well now, that’s not too shabby. . . . Seems Hollywood’s been hot, hot, hot despite the cold season. Friday’s performance by Godhead (the band’s new album was produced by Marilyn Manson) sold out Hollywood’s Dragonfly. Saturday’s first anniversary party for Bang!, a hot mod club at the Ruby in Hollywood, also sold out--with a line winding down Hollywood Boulevard. On Sunday night, Beat It, another dance club at the Ruby, also managed to hit capacity, with kids dressing like 1980s prom dates (ouch!). . . .

Nick Heyward of Haircut 100 is scheduled to perform at Rodney’s English Disco on Jan. 26, which is held monthly at L.A.’s Cafe Club Fais Do-Do. . . . Rumor has it the New Year’s Eve anniversary party held at the Hollywood Athletic Club was such a success, its promoters considered teaming up to throw such a scrumpdillyicious glam affair weekly, only to be thwarted by the HAC’s steep rent. Hey, maybe they should think about the Ruby. . . . Tonight’s pop performers at Highland Grounds’ Third Thursday series include a rare solo outing by Phil Parlapiano, who used to bring down the house back in his Brothers Figaro heyday, as well as performances by Dramarama frontman John Easdale and British troubadour Rupert Clerveaux. As always, it’s free, so what’s stoppin’ you? . . .

Saturday’s Bowl-A-Rama at Eagle Rock’s All-Star Lanes includes some dramarama of its own: Live performances by Johnny 7 & the Radio Flyers, 44 Double D, Rip Carson & His Chain Gang and James Intveld. Bowling’s free with the price of admission. . . . Got my ears blown and my heart warmed at Beauty Bar last Thursday, as DJ Garren brewed up an excellent cocktail of punk, glam and rock. When he played Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” I got all weak in the knees. It was the first time in years I’d heard the beautiful ballad outside an all-ages dance club. You shoulda seen the ladies line up to the bar, just to catch a glimpse of the guy who was playing their song.
