PBS Filmmaker to Speak * Temple Beth Torah in Ventura will hold a lox and bagel Sunday brunch from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Special guest speaker will be Edward Cohen, award-winning author and PBS documentary filmmaker. Cohen will discuss his memoir, “The Peddler’s Grandson: Growing Up Jewish in Mississippi,” which was recently awarded Mississippi’s top two literary awards for nonfiction. The cost is $10.

7 Church Choirs to Perform * Choirs from seven Ventura County churches will join in a hymn and organ festival Sunday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1500 North C St., Oxnard. The event is being presented by the Ventura County Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and the Ventura County Council of Churches. In his sermon to the Conejo fellowship, the Rev. Bill Greene will outline an ecumenical proposal that asks “coalitions of people of faith and people of no faith to commit to radical social change, in dialogue and in action.” The service will begin at 10 a.m.

In her sermon to the Simi Valley congregation, the Rev. Betty Stapleford will call for forming a broad-based coalition of churches and service organizations committed to justice and peace. The service will also begin at 10 a.m.

Grief Support Group to Meet * GriefShare, a recovery seminar and support group, meets Mondays at 7 p.m. at Ventura Missionary Church. The program features nationally recognized experts discussing grief and recovery topics. Bishops Discuss Vatican Declaration * Lutheran Bishop Paul Egertson and Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas Curry will discuss the Vatican declaration “Dominus Jesus” Tuesday at St. John’s Seminary, 5012 Seminary Road, Camarillo.

The controversial declaration was published last fall by the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, headed by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, which is thought by many to teach that only Roman Catholics can receive salvation. Emmanuel Presbyterian Courses * Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Thousand Oaks on Wednesday evening will hold the third installment of an eight-week course designed to introduce the basics of the Christian faith. Titled “ALPHA,” the weekly sessions include dinner, a short video presentation, small group meetings and question-and-answer sessions. Courses are held each Wednesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The course work is designed to appeal to those who are curious to know why Jesus Christ is considered to be the Messiah.
