Capitol Crash

Share

By my count from your story on Mike Bowers (Jan. 18), the man had been sent to prison for violent crimes six times and then paroled five times before a jury, apparently ignoring the testimony of state psychiatrists, decided he was no longer a threat to us. One more go-around last month resulted in probation. What’s wrong with this picture?

Shouldn’t we be curious about the reasoning of judges and juries who can’t seem to grasp the concept of “bad customer”?

When we all first heard about the truck that went into the Capitol building in Sacramento, the first thing we thought was “terrorist” or a deliberate attack of some kind. A generation ago, the first thing we would have thought would have been that the driver lost control of the truck or perhaps the brakes failed. Kind of says something about our society, doesn’t it?
