Niesen Scores 41; Mission Viejo Wins

Travis Niesen scored 41 points, including the game-winning free throw in the final seconds, to help host Mission Viejo defeat San Clemente, ranked 10th in Orange County, 64-63, Monday in a South Coast League boys’ basketball game.

Eddie Miller made one free throw with three seconds remaining to make it 63-63, but he missed the second. Niesen got the rebound, his 14th of the game, and was fouled. He made one of two free throws to give the Diablos the winning margin.

It was the first lead of the game for Mission Viejo (13-8, 2-3), which trailed, 20-2, in the first quarter.

Guard Curtis Bush scored 23 points and James Hartman had 13 for the Tritons (13-5, 2-3), who are in a third-place tie with the Diablos.

In other league games:

No. 3 Capistrano Valley 77, Trabuco Hills 54--Jake Franzen scored 20 points, Matt Sweaney had 18 and Pete De Casas 14 for the visiting Cougars (18-2, 5-0). James Webster scored 21 points for Trabuco Hills (12-8, 2-3).

No. 4 El Toro 61, Dana Hills 53--Ashkan Nazeri had 15 points and Matt Green 10 points and 10 rebounds for El Toro (19-2, 4-1). Ken Tanaka had six assists for the Chargers.

In the Freeway League:

No. 10 Sonora 56, La Habra 44--Marcellus Robertson scored 16 points for the visiting Raiders (19-3, 5-0). La Habra is 11-11, 1-4.

Buena Park 52, Fullerton 50--Eugene Ikahihifo made a layup and was fouled in the last 30 seconds of the game to help Buena Park take the lead and win. Ikahihifo finished with 20 points.

Chris Ingram scored four of his nine points in the last three minutes of the game for Buena Park (6-13, 3-2).

In Freeway League girls’ basketball:

No. 5 Troy 90, Sunny Hills 21--Veronica Johns-Richards had 22 points, seven assists, seven steals, Amanda Livingston had 17 points and nine rebounds and Alicia Komaki had 11 points and eight assists for the Warriors (17-4, 5-0), who led, 54-10, at halftime. Sunny Hills is 9-12, 2-3.

In the Garden Grove League:

Santiago 57, Bolsa Grande 27--Jody Robertson scored 17 points and Barbara Sualua 14 for the visiting Cavaliers (13-7, 4-2). Chau Phan had 17 points for Bolsa Grande (0-20, 0-6).

In Century League boys’ soccer:

Villa Park 2, Canyon 1--Jakob Huber’s 16th goal came on a cross from 15 yards with 10 minutes remaining for the host Spartans (10-10-2, 2-3). Wedge Howland also scored for Villa Park. Bryan Gerrard scored the only goal for Canyon (2-2-1 in league).

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 0, Fullerton 0 (OT)--Tim Gonzalez made one save for Sonora (11-4-2, 3-0-2), and goalkeeper Fila Fuentes had three saves for host Fullerton (10-4-3, 4-0-1).

In the Garden Grove League:

Bolsa Grande 1, Santiago 0--Victor Lopez scored in the first half for Bolsa Grande (1-5-1 in league).

In the South Coast League:

No. 1 Dana Hills 3, El Toro 1--Nick Garton had two assists and Chris Mangiapane, Matt Du Hadway and Forrest Smith scored for the first-place Dolphins (16-1-3, 4-0-1).

No. 6 Capistrano Valley 3, Trabuco Hills 0--Greg Robertson scored off an assist from Matt Barnes in the 28th minute and Jesse Dunn scored five minutes later for the Cougars (15-3-5, 2-0-2). Barnes also assisted on Garrett Petry’s second-half goal. Trabuco Hills is 8-7-4, 2-2-1.

In the Sunset League:

No. 7 Huntington Beach 1, Fountain Valley 0--Alex Maddocks scored off a cross from Drew McAthy midway through the second half for the Oilers (10-2-1, 4-0). Kyle Pollack made four saves for Fountain Valley (7-2-5, 1-3).

In Freeway League girls’ water polo:

Sonora 8, Fullerton 4--Juli Hinz scored three goals and Venessa Wargo had two for host Sonora (13-11, 3-2). Sonora goalkeeper Emily Craig had six saves.

Sunny Hills 12, La Habra 4--Roxanna McEwen and Shelma Jun scored three goals each and Jessica Ajoux and Emily Stein each had two for the visiting Lancers (10-6, 5-0). Natasha Peterson scored twice for La Habra (0-5 in league).

In the Katella tournament:

Western 5, Chino 3--Dina Jubran and Lindsey Brown scored two goals each to lead Western in the second round of pool play. Natalie Hower had three goals to help the Pioneers to a 4-3 victory over Redlands East Valley, which is ranked fifth in the Southern Section Division V.

In a nonleague game:

Rolling Hills Peninsula 7, Brea Olinda 5 (OT)--Andrea Lanzisera scored twice and Nicole Kato made 10 saves for the Wildcats (23-6).
