ID Card Would Track Attendance

SACRAMENTO — A high school district here is considering keeping better track of students through an identification card that would be swiped through a scanning device in classrooms.
The system that the Grant Joint Union High School District hopes to have in place by next year could instantly record absences, officials said.
“The bottom line for our district is that we cannot improve student achievement if students are not in their seats,” said Supt. Larry Buchanan.
The California Department of Education’s Safe Schools and Violence Prevention Office said it is unaware of any similar program in the state.
