Council Delays Vote on Filling Goldberg’s Seat

Share

The Los Angeles City Council delayed a decision Tuesday on whether to appoint Jackie Goldberg’s former chief of staff to serve out the remaining five months of the ex-councilwoman’s term.

The council refused to consider a motion to name Sharon Delugach to the 13th District and sent the matter to committee for review.

Goldberg vacated the seat in December, after she was elected to the state Assembly.

Councilman Hal Bernson said the council should leave the matter up to the voters. Councilwoman Laura Chick urged the council to act now.

Councilman Joel Wachs said the council should consider others who want the appointment to the district, which includes Hollywood and Silver Lake.

More than a dozen people have filed for the April 10 election to succeed Goldberg. On another matter, the council delayed voting on a proposal to withdraw from the federal consent decree to reform the Police Department, which city lawmakers approved in November under federal pressure.
