$100,000 State Grant Approved for Police
City Council members have voted unanimously to use $108,000 in state grant money to pay for Police Department expenses.
The Cypress Police Department received the funding last September because of a 1996 bill passed by the Legislature allocating $100 million for law enforcement agencies throughout the state.
The council decided Monday that the city’s funds from the California Supplemental Law Enforcement legislation will go toward hiring an additional officer for its jail staff and to pay for new computer software, an evidence holding cabinet, video system, crime scene investigation tools and other equipment.
The grant money also will help pay for a reverse 911 system. The cities of Los Alamitos and Seal Beach will share the cost of using the service, which enables officers to contact entire neighborhoods in emergency situations, such as a hazardous materials spill. Cypress’ portion for this service is $15,000, according to Police Chief John Hensley, who said he’s excited at the chance to add an officer, additional equipment and services.
