Orange Recall Campaigners Say Petitions Certified

Signatures on petitions to recall three Orange Unified School District trustees have been certified, a recall campaign leader and others said Wednesday.

“I feel good for the taxpayers and the children in Orange Unified,” Orange Recall Committee Chairwoman Melinda Moore said. “We’re overjoyed they came through with the certification.”

The Orange County registrar of voters certified the 20,285 signatures Wednesday, said Judy Frutig, former communications director for the district. Registrar’s officials did not return calls.

Only 14,500 signatures, or 15% of registered voters in the district, are required to call a special election. The school board must do so not less than 88 days or more than 125 working days from the registrar’s issuance of an “order of election” document.

The recall group wants to unseat Linda Davis, Martin Jacobson and Maureen Aschoff from the seven-member school board, alleging that they have mismanaged the district and precipitated an exodus of teachers. The targeted board members say they will fight the attempt.

The 30,000-student district encompasses Orange and parts of Villa Park, Anaheim, Santa Ana and Garden Grove.
