Investors Await AT&T; Report on Growth Prospects

Because investors have already braced themselves for AT&T; Corp.’s dismal fourth-quarter results, coming today, the real interest lies in whether the phone and cable television giant has something--anything--positive to say about its 2001 growth prospects, analysts said. Investors also await news on whether the company will cut jobs in its broadband cable-television unit. While some analysts speculated the unit might shed as many as 2,000 jobs, others dismissed that notion, saying job cuts would only add more distraction to the chaos at AT&T.; AT&T; declined to comment on potential job cuts.
