Lloyd Schwan; Known for Unusual Furniture and Interior Design

Lloyd Schwan, 45, an innovative furniture and interior designer whose work included vivid colors and cartoon-like shapes. One of Schwan’s most noted works, the Crinkle Lamp, a steel lamp with a crushed vinyl lampshade, is part of the design collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Born in Chicago, Schwan studied fine arts at the Chicago Art Institute. He started his career in 1984 when he and Lynn Godley, then his wife, founded GodleySchwan Design. The company initially produced handmade art furniture pieces and later moved into cabinetry, tableware and lighting. Their often whimsical style contrasted sharply with the stiff, modern style predominant in America at the time. On Jan. 19 at his home in Kutztown, Pa., a suicide, his family said.
