Power Goes Out for 1,600 Customers
About 1,600 Agoura Hills households and businesses lost electricity Monday because of an equipment failure--unrelated to California’s power crisis, a Southern California Edison spokesman said.
Grocery stores and restaurants closed their doors, and traffic signals went dark just as the evening rush hour began.
Power went out along Thousand Oaks Boulevard, between Kanan and Lindero Canyon roads, at 4:23 p.m., Edison spokesman Paul Klein said. Within 30 minutes, half of the affected customers were back on line.
At the Ralphs supermarket in the Twin Oaks Plaza shopping center, employees were trying to keep the store’s perishable food from warming and turning bad.
A hastily handwritten sign on the store’s locked door read: “We are closed due to power failure. Sorry.” A few feet away, a printed sign promoted Ralphs’ contribution to ease California’s ongoing power woes: “We’re powering down, dimming our lights, saving our energy for you.”
California’s Independent System Operator, which manages most of the state’s power grid and orders blackouts to relieve the overtaxed system, had not ordered any outages Monday for the Agoura Hills area.
