Contact Visits Resume for Death Row Inmates

From Times Wire Reports

Contact visits for the best-behaved inmates on California's death row have been restored, at least in part, after extensive redesign of the visiting room.

Inmates may now meet with friends and families in separate metal enclosures set up in what was a communal visiting area.

Inmate advocates say the redesigned visiting room is better than the alternative--telephone conversations carried on from behind a thick plastic shield.

"The inmate is sitting with his or her loved ones in actually a cage, but it's brightly lit and it's not bad," said Robert Bryan, an attorney for several death row inmates.
