I read that Congress is finally beginning to look into the possibility of tightening the regulations on SUV gas mileage (June 27). It is not only a crucial step in the movement for energy conservation but also a sensible one. If SUVs were simply made to comply with the same gas-mileage standards as regular automobiles (instead of trucks), we would save enough oil in three years to make up for the entire estimated oil content of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. As a member of CalPIRG, I think this relates to our Clean Energy Solutions Campaign, in which we are promoting the use of renewable energy sources (solar, wind and geothermal) in the hopes that California (and the entire U.S.) may someday wean itself off of fossil fuels.
