IBM Corp. cut 1,000 U.S. jobs in its services division, while saying the group’s total head count will grow this year.
The company notified the employees that their jobs will be eliminated in 30 days to “rebalance skills” based on customer needs, IBM spokeswoman Jan Butler said. IBM Global Services has about 150,000 workers worldwide, and the group has hired about 10,000 workers so far this year, she said.
The job cuts, representing less than 1% of the Global Services work force, are the first by the group this year, Butler said. A similar number of cuts were made last year in May. IBM, which employs 330,000 people worldwide, rose 85 cents to $114.35 on the New York Stock Exchange.
