A Pasadena industrialist pledged $7 million to support the USC School of Engineering’s Center of Composite Materials, the university announced Monday.

Merwyn C. Gill, a 1937 USC graduate, pledged $5 million through the M.C. Gill Foundation and an additional $250,000 per year for eight years.

“The world of material science has advanced tremendously since my early days, and composite materials are an increasingly important aspect of our everyday lives,” said Gill, who started a company in his garage 55 years ago.
