Testing the Truth of Beer and Doughnuts

Share

In “A Few Coors Lights Might Blur the Truth” (June 29), Steve Lopez reported that downing a six-pack of beer in two hours resulted in only a 0.06% blood-alcohol reading, less than the legal limit of 0.08%. This is at odds with the Department of Motor Vehicles’ alcohol impairment chart, sent out with our car registrations. According to that chart, someone of Lopez’s weight (205 pounds) would be well into the “definitely DUI” range after consuming six beers in two hours. Since the DMV considers one drink to be 10 ounces of beer instead of a 12-ounce can, Lopez actually consumed over seven DMV-sized drinks in that two-hour period, pushing him even further into the definitely DUI range.

It would appear that either the DMV charts are overly pessimistic or that Lopez has an unusual tolerance for alcohol.

There is a third possible explanation: Perhaps those Krispy Kreme doughnuts he was eating have miraculous anti-alcohol properties. Bars will no doubt be serving them to intoxicated patrons from now on.
