State Sen. Martha Escutia’s “Sweetless Fund-Raising” (Voices, June 30), about standards for foods sold at schools, chastises schools and parents for fund-raising with high-fat, high-sugar foods. Yes, it’s easier to sell soda and have a steady income to help with sports programs. Organizing a jog-a-thon requires countless hours of work by volunteers who already donate their precious time to the schools.
Escutia should look at the real problem here. Why are schools and parents forced to spend countless hours fund-raising? Because legislators are not properly funding schools. By pointing fingers at the schools and parents for their fund-raising practices, Escutia is attempting to mask the fact that she and her fellow legislators hold the power to fix the real problem.
