Grissom’s Outburst Was a Big Surprise to Daly

Share

Chairman Bob Daly is one of the biggest supporters of outfielder Marquis Grissom, who has emerged as a clubhouse leader in his brief time with the team.

However, Daly acknowledged that Grissom “blew up” during his umpire-shoving outburst in Wednesday’s 4-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium.

Umpire Marvin Hudson ejected Grissom for arguing a called third strike, triggering an incident that undoubtedly will result in Grissom being fined and suspended.

“I’m sure something’s going to happen,” Daly said. “I don’t think it’s going to be monumental, but I think it’s going to be something. I was surprised because he doesn’t usually lose his temper at all.

“He really blew up there. I think there was a cumulative thing that took place. It looked like to me . . . he was upset with the first strike call and [Gary] Sheffield was complaining before that. But he did lose it pretty good.”

Flags at Dodger Stadium were flown at half-staff Thursday and a moment of silence was observed in memory of Terry Johnson, a former longtime Dodger beat writer who died Wednesday after a car accident. See story, Page B13.
