FRESHWATER

Los Angeles County

CASTAIC LAKE--Largemouth bass action remains good for fish averaging one to three pounds. Night crawlers and shad are good baits. Plastic worms are working too. Striped bass are not as active but a 12-6 striper was caught on a Stocker Trout and another the same size on a Rapala.

PYRAMID LAKE--Bass action is fair to good with crankbaits, tube jigs and night crawlers. The average size is two pounds. Catfish action is fair with night crawlers and anchovies. Small striped bass are boiling at times near the island.

Ventura County

LAKE CASITAS--Bass fishing is slow. Trout fishing is best--they’re at 40-50 feet lake-wide and biting on Needlefish, Power Bait and night crawlers. Catfish are biting in the shallows on mackerel. Lots of 10-pounders.

LAKE PIRU--Fishing is slow. Bass fishing early, with plastic worms, is the best bet.

Santa Barbara County

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout action is slow to fair at the west end. The fish are at 40 feet and biting best on Needlefish. Bass fishing is fair early at the east end. Crankbaits and plastic worms are working best. Red-ear perch are biting on night crawlers in the brush at Arrowhead Island.

Orange County

ANAHEIM LAKE--The lake has opened stocked with catfish and the action is fair to good during evening hours.

IRVINE LAKE--Trout are biting early along the west shore, but catfish are holding the spotlight. Mackerel are luring limits of fish averaging two-three pounds.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--The catfish bite starts about 5 p.m. and fishing is good. A 15-pounder that ate a hunk of barracuda tops the list. Bass fishing has been spotty.

San Bernardino County

BIG BEAR LAKE--Trout fishing is slow to fair and no large fish were reported. Best area: Gray’s dock and Rock Wall. A few small bass were caught on crankbaits.

GREEN VALLEY LAKE--Trout are biting early on Power Bait, night crawlers and small spinners. No big fish but several limits.

Riverside County

CORONA LAKE--Catfish action is fair to good late afternoons and evenings. Crappies are cooperating too. Standard baits are working for both.

LAKE PERRIS--Small bass and bluegills are active but fishing is only fair early and slow during the heat of day.

LAKE SKINNER--Largemouth bass are active at the east end and striking dark plastics and night crawlers. Catfish action is fair and striped bass action is slow to fair. The stripers are deep.

San Diego County

LAKE CUYAMACA--A seven-pound bass was caught on a Trout Teaser. Bass fishing is slow, as is trout fishing. Crappie fishing is good on mini-jigs.

DIXON LAKE--Night-fishing for catfish is best, the fish averaging one-four pounds. Striped bass are being caught after dark and, in hopes of keeping them from overrunning other species, a free fishing permit is being offered as bounty.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Bluegill action remains good at Lower Otay and San Vicente. Bass fishing is fair at the bass lakes but the bigger fish remain elusive. Some crappies and catfish at all the lakes.

LAKE WOHLFORD--Bass action has slowed, but the emphasis is on catfish and fishing is fair to good early on mackerel and sardines.

Eastern Sierra

BISHOP AREA--Big trout were planted throughout Bishop Creek Canyon. A 6-9 specimen was caught on a Trout Trap in Bishop Creek, another 6-7 was caught on salmon eggs in South Lake and a 4-9 trout was caught on a Trout Trap in North Lake. Hard to go wrong anywhere up West Line Street.

MAMMOTH LAKES AREA--Crowley Lake remains very good, despite an algae bloom. That and a low water level have the fish stacked near the tributaries. Fly fishermen using chironomids, sizes 16-20, in olive, gray and brown are getting lots of action. The San Joaquin River action is superb for fly fishermen using olive caddis flies. Other good bets: Convict Lake (good chance for a lunker), Rock Creek (small browns) and Lake George (fish to nine pounds).

JUNE LAKE LOOP--The trout are holding at mid-lake in June Lake, striking trolled Needlefish and occasionally rising for woolly buggers and caddis flies. Trollers are doing best at Silver and Grant also. Gull Lake anglers are doing well early with small night crawlers. Rush Creek is fair with salmon eggs.

BRIDGEPORT AREA--A 9-12 brown was caught in Lower Twin by a Nevada angler trolling a U-20 Flat Fish. The fish bit at 70 feet. Upper and Lower Twin are good for mostly trout. Dropping water levels have the trout congregating at mid-lake in Bridgeport Reservoir. Inflated night crawlers are getting lots of fish in the three-pound class. Virginia Lakes good for limits of mostly small trout. Robinson Creek is well stocked with small rainbows.
