Two new exhibitions survey one of the great American photographers in “Walker Evans & Company: Works From the Museum of Modern Art” and “The American Tradition and Walker Evans: Photographs From the Getty Collection,” at the J. Paul Getty Museum. Together, the exhibitions will explore how Evans influenced an impressive roster of photographers such as Carleton Watkins, Dorothea Lange, Paul Strand, Diane Arbus, Robert Frank and Cindy Sherman--who will all be included in the exhibitions. *

John Cameron Mitchell’s “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” kicks off Outfest 2001, the 19th Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. With annual attendance averaging more than 40,000, Outfest is the largest film festival in Southern California and since its inception in 1982 has screened more than 2,800 films and videos. Luis Valdez directs his landmark musical “Zoot Suit,” inspired by the 1943 Los Angeles Sleepy Lagoon murder case that sparked the Zoot Suit Riots. The first Los Angeles revival since its 1978 premiere, the production is presented by L.A. In 1994, the influential riot grrrl group Bratmobile broke up (onstage!), but the trio is back in full gear after its 1998 reunion, with the current album “Ladies, Women and Girls” adding keyboards and other new touches to the aggro foundation.
