Pacemaker Pundits
I found it interesting, and amusing, that folks would write to The Times to complain about Vice President Cheney apparently getting “free” medical care from the government (“Cheney’s Health and Medical Coverage,” letters, July 8). Last year, Cheney paid $14.2 million in federal income taxes. Do you suppose he would prefer to have that money back and pay his own medical bills?
If I had the federal government take $14.2 million from me, I don’t think that I would consider anything I got in return as free. How many Americans is he subsidizing with regard to Medicare?
Last year, Cheney gave more than $7.8 million to charity. And you folks begrudge him a pacemaker? Shame on you.
