PGA TOUR

Greater Milwaukee Open

* Where: Brown Deer Park Golf Course (6,759 yards, par 71), Milwaukee.

* Schedule: Today-Sunday.

* Purse: $3.1 million. Winner’s share: $558,000.

* TV: The Golf Channel and Fox Sports Net (today-Friday, 12:30-3 p.m.) and Channel 7 (Saturday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.).

* Last year: Loren Roberts won the tournament for the second time in five years, setting records with a 24-under 260 total and an eight-stroke margin of victory.

* Last week: Scott Hoch won the Western Open, beating Davis Love III with a tournament-record 21-under 267 total. Hoch, 45, also won the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic in April.

* Notes: NCAA champion Nick Gilliam is making his professional debut. The former Florida star is from Green Bay, Wis. . . . Roberts is making his 19th consecutive appearance in the tournament. . . . Jerry Kelly said the rough at Brown Deer Park is of U.S. Open quality. “If you don’t get the ball on the fairway, then you are going to be lucky to find your ball on the green,” Kelly said. . . . Hoch, the 1995 and 1997 GMO winner, jumped from 16th to seventh in the Ryder Cup standings with his Western Open victory. . . . The British Open is next week at Royal Lytham and St. Annes. The PGA Tour’s B.C. Open also is next week, in Endicott, N.Y.

Players Championship

* Where: TPC of Michigan (6,876 yards, par 72); Dearborn, Mich.

* When: Today-Sunday.

* Purse: $2.4 million. Winner’s share: $360,000.

* TV: ESPN (today-Friday, noon-3 p.m.) and Channel 7 (Saturday-Sunday, 1-3 p.m.).

* Last year: Ray Floyd overcame a six-stroke deficit in the final round to beat Larry Nelson and Dana Quigley by a stroke. Floyd also won the 1996 tournament.

* Last week: Nelson successfully defended his Farmers Charity Classic title, holding off Jim Ahern by a stroke. Nelson has four victories this season.

* Notes: The tournament is the final senior major of the year. Doug Tewell won the Tradition in April, Tom Watson took the Senior PGA in May, and Bruce Fleisher won the U.S. Senior Open two weeks ago in Salem, Mass. . . . Jack Nicklaus won the 1990 tournament with a tour-record 27-under 261 total. He designed the TPC of Michigan. . . . Bruce Lietzke will make his senior debut next week in the SBC Championship in Long Grove, Ill.

Michelob Light Classic

* Where: Fox Run Golf Club (6,452 yards, par 72); Eureka, Mo.

* When: Friday-Sunday.

* Purse: $800,000. Winner’s share: $120,000.

* TV: ESPN2 (Friday, 10 a.m.-noon; Saturday-Sunday, noon-2 p.m.).

* Last year: Canada’s Lorie Kane won her first title after nine second-place finishes, beating Kristi Albers by three strokes. Kane won two more 2000 events and took the Takefuji Classic in February.

* Last week: South Korea’s Se Ri Pak won the Jamie Farr Kroger Classic for the third time in four years, beating Sweden’s Maria Hjorth by two strokes. Pak has three victories this year.

* Notes: Sweden’s Annika Sorenstam won in 1995, 1997, 1998 and 1999 at Forest Hills Country Club. . . . The top five players after 36 holes not otherwise exempt for the Women’s British Open will earn spots in the Aug. 2-5 tournament at Sunningdale Golf Club in Berkshire, England. To be eligible, the players were required to enter the British Open by July 3 and designate the tournament as a qualifier. . . . The Big Apple Classic is next week in New Rochelle, N.Y.
