I found myself surprisingly saddened by the closure of Webvan (“Online Grocer Webvan Shuts Operations,” July 10). I primarily did business with the company when it was HomeGrocer.com, as I was the mother of a newborn and a 3-year-old. Having all of my heavy groceries delivered up my long flight of stairs was worth the extra cost.

My older son quickly recognized HomeGrocer’s peach logo, due to its daily trips to our Glendale neighborhood. I suspected it wasn’t going to last much longer when Webvan purchased it. I was mostly saddened not for myself but for the people for whom its service was truly a lifesaver. I do hope another company can figure out how to operate such a crucial service in a cost-effective manner.
