Colombia defeated Ecuador, 1-0, Saturday in Barranquilla, Colombia, and joined Chile in the second round of the Copa America soccer tournament.

Chile advanced with a 1-0 victory over Venezuela in Group A.

Victor Aristizabal broke a stubborn Ecuadorean defense and scored in the 29th minute.

Colombia served notice early that it would be on the attack when Freddy Grisales fired from 20 yards, forcing goalie Jose Cevallos to dive to his right for a save in the third minute.

Colombia gained a clear but unproductive command of the game, and Ecuador replied with a well-organized defense and dangerous counterattacks.
