Teens and Gen-X Taste

Re “Teens Shun Gross-Out Movie Genre,” Opinion, July 15: It gave me hope to see that my 7-year-old daughter, a child of both “Barney” and “Sesame Street,” will grow up with different tastes from my 18-and 19-year-old college students. Although I agree with William Strauss and Neil Howe, their examples are off by a generation.

As literally one of the last baby boomers, I grew up reading Judy Blume and loving horror films, including “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Exorcist.” What films populated the Gen-X childhood? Splatter films and their sequels: the “Halloween” franchise (1978-82, excluding the 20th anniversary film), the “Friday the 13th” franchise (1980-86) and the “Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise (1984-91 or 1994, depending on your loyalty). That may give some idea as to why Gen-X film gurus are still stuck in the gross-out machine.
