Making good on a promise to seek traffic relief for their constituents, Corona officials Wednesday sued Caltrans for compensation for damage they say was caused by the Riverside Freeway.

“Caltrans has created a traffic nightmare on the 91 Freeway, and our citizens are paying the price every day,” Mayor Karen Stein said in a written statement.

The lawsuit stems from a 1990 agreement giving a private company the right to operate toll lanes on the freeway in exchange for taking over Caltrans’ responsibility for safety and traffic improvements. A city press release says the state “created a public nuisance by creating traffic congestion on the 91 Freeway and surrounding city streets.”

The lawsuit seeks an unspecified compensation for the damage and demands that Caltrans fix the problem by adding lanes to the freeway and making safety improvements.
