And in Rio de Janeiro ... A juvenile court judge delayed fashion shows for three days earlier this week while inspectors checked for young models who were not enrolled in school.

Judge Siro Darlan issued an order banning models younger than 18 who were not enrolled in school from appearing in fashion shows at the eighth annual BarraShopping style week that ended Wednesday.

Twenty-two models, including rising Brazilian star Raica Oliveira, 16, were barred. On Sunday, models at one show paraded down the catwalk with their IDs on display to protest the ban.

“They should be inspecting the streets, asking all those abandoned children why they aren’t studying,” model Marian Wieckert, 19, said in the O Globo newspaper. “It was a joke,” she said of the judge’s order.
