EPA Proposal Would Reduce Haze in Sequoia
I read with interest “A Shroud on Sequoia’s Scenery” (July 17), about deteriorating views at Sequoia and other national parks in the West. It accurately portrayed the severe challenges smog and other environmental hazards pose to the continued enjoyment of our country’s natural treasures.
Though it briefly alluded to actions announced by President Bush during his trip to Sequoia in May, I was surprised that the article did not inform your readers of the administration’s support for a rule designed specifically to improve the visibility in our national parks.
On June 22, I signed a proposal that aims to clear the skies in our parks by helping states control haze-causing emissions from older power plants and industrial facilities. This measure addresses many of the concerns raised in the article about the source of smog in Sequoia National Park and will provide a significant step toward restoring the vistas for current and future generations to enjoy.
