Fugitive Mexico Banker May Go Free on Bail
Fugitive Mexican banker Carlos Cabal Peniche, wanted in Mexico on fraud, is set to leave jail after a court granted what has been called the highest bail ever set in Australia.
Cabal, who has been behind bars for more than 2 1/2 years and is fighting extradition, will probably walk out of prison today in Melbourne. Australian High Court Justice Michael Kirby set bail at more than $1.02 million.
Cabal’s lawyer, Murray Gerkens, said the release had been delayed a day because Mexican authorities indicated that they might seek to appeal the decision.
