Clements Is First in Individual Medley

Kevin Clements of Industry Hills Aquatics Club won the men’s 400-meter individual medley Saturday on the third day of the Janet Evans Invitational swim meet at USC.

Clements, fourth in the event at the 2000 Olympic trials, took the lead on the breaststroke portion and finished in 4 minutes 30.69 seconds.

Matthew Huang, 17, of the Pacific Dolphin Swimming Association of Canada defeated former Olympian Ron Karnaugh in the 200 breaststroke. Huang, from Vancouver, finished in 2:20.64. Swimming unattached, Karnaugh, 35, finished in 2:21.98.

Gavin Meadows of Sun Devil Aquatics won the 200 freestyle in 1:51.60, and teammate Richard Bera won the 50 freestyle in 23.60.

Gabrielle Rose of the Irvine Novaquatics won her second event of the meet, the 200 freestyle in 2:01.70.

Tara Kirk of Stanford won the 200 breaststroke in 2:29.41; Kristen Caverly of the Irvine Aquazots was second in 2:31.82 but came back to win the 400 individual medley in 4:50.53.

Christina Swindle, 16, of Miami Swimming, who broke the national high school record in the 100 freestyle last fall, won the 50 freestyle in 26.17. Rose was second in 26.34.
