Vittorio De Sica’s neorealist classic “The Bicycle Thief” screens as part of the outdoor series “Cinema Under the Stars.” Winner of a special Academy Award before Oscars were given for foreign-language films, the movie follows the lives of a man and his son after the man’s bike (and the source of his meager livelihood) is stolen. Presented by Moxie!/The Santa Monica Film Festival, in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Culture. Screening later this summer are “Mediterraneo” on Aug. 12 and “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” on Aug. 26.

Aby M. Warburg, influential and idiosyncratic German Jewish scholar of the early 20th century, saw his library as a site of ritual and creativity. Instead of using it as a receptacle for his impressive collection of books and photographs covering such topics as pageantry, astrology and portraiture, the cultural historian used this space to rethink associations and juxtapositions within the discipline of art history. “Asylum in the Library: The Method, Madness and Magic of Aby M. Warburg,” opening Sunday at the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History, explores the mind of the scholar and the subjects he studied through a model of Warburg’s library and an exploration of his methodology.
