Beckman Coulter Reports 14% Increase in 2nd Quarter

Beckman Coulter Inc., a Fullerton provider of medical laboratory products, said net income for the second quarter rose 14% to $36.8 million, or 58 cents a share, from $32.4 million, or 53 cents a share, a year ago. Sales increased 6% to $496.4 million.

Other Orange County company earnings:

* Onyx Acceptance Corp., a Foothill Ranch automobile finance company, said second-quarter net income totaled $1.8 million, or 35 cents a share, up 13% from $1.6 million, or 25 cents a share, for the comparable 2000 period. Revenue increased 14% to $28.9 million.

* Micro Therapeutics Inc., an Irvine medical devices company, incurred a second-quarter net loss of $3.6 million, or 34 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $2.7 million, or 27 cents a share, for the 2000 second quarter. Sales more than doubled to a record $2.6 million. The company also said it wrapped up a two-stage financing agreement that generated $56 million for ongoing clinical programs, marketing and new-product development, and debt repayment.

* Radiance Medical Systems Inc., an Irvine maker of medical products, reported that its net loss for the second quarter widened to $3.2 million, or 24 cents a share, from $1.2 million, or 10 cents a share, for the same period a year earlier. Revenue declined 28% to $1.8 million.
