Tilting the Scales of Mideast Violence

Re “Sitting Ducks,” editorial, July 24: For decades Israel and its lobby have pressured the United States to blindly and unequivocally abide by Israel’s policies, as evidenced by a plethora of U.S. vetoes in the U.N. and the tacit approval of Israel’s expansionist policies and murderous treatment of Palestinians.

Now The Times follows suit and argues against placing monitors. Obviously the rest of the world concludes differently. Israel, the U.S. and The Times must be afraid of the truth. Let the monitors in, and report the truth about what is happening in Palestine, where the “sitting ducks” are the Palestinian youth.

Your editorial contained the following absurd statement: “President Bush has sensibly tried to stay out of a conflict that does not seem susceptible to mediation, at least right now.” The obvious absurdity is that we U.S. taxpayers are giving $3 billion a year to one of the combatants, in effect financing its high-tech weapons advantage over the other. How in the world can you be so naive?
