Rowdiness Apparently Kills City’s Mardi Gras
The city’s top administrator has told organizers that he won’t approve an event permit for next year’s Mardi Gras parade because of the event’s increasing rowdiness.
Administrative Officer Ken Hampian’s decision could be appealed to the City Council, but Mardi Gras organizers apparently have accepted it.
The event started small 23 years ago and grew to be the city’s largest annual bash. At its peak in 2000, it was the largest Mardi Gras celebration west of the Mississippi, with 35,000 participants.
But as crowds swelled, so did drunkenness, vandalism, public urination and other problems.
