Bike Lanes Are Abused

Share

So the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is planning to build more bike lanes (“The Bike Is Back,” editorial, May 31). Great! But what is the use of bike lanes that are regularly blocked by delivery trucks and other vehicles? When the bike lane is blocked, it forces the cyclist into the car lanes, increasing his or her risk of being run over. At the very least, the cyclist will slow down traffic. If we were serious about bike lanes, we would penalize parking or driving on them with the same hefty fines that we apply to carpool or handicapped parking violators.
