Marie Bremont, 115; Believed to Be Oldest Person in the World
Marie Bremont, 115, a Frenchwoman believed to be the world’s oldest person, died Wednesday in her sleep in a Cande, France, nursing home about 150 miles west of Paris.
She earned the title in November with the death of Eva Morris of Britain at the age of 114 years and 361 days.
At Bremont’s 115th birthday on April 25, she dressed up in a red suit and shared strawberry cake and white wine with friends. Although her sight and hearing had deteriorated, she said that she was “proud to be the doyenne of humanity.”
Bremont, who suffered a broken arm when she was hit by a car at the age of 103, was widowed during World War I and again in 1967. Born in 1886, she began working on a farm at the age of 8 and was later a pharmaceutical factory worker, nanny and seamstress.
Some believe the world’s oldest person is Elizabeth Israel, who lives on the Caribbean island of Dominica and reportedly turned 126 in January. But the Guinness Book of World Records has not confirmed that claim.
