‘A’ for Abstinence

Re “Finding Good in ‘Normal,’ ” June 12: As a college student I find the idea of “social norms marketing” to reduce the occurrence of unhealthy behaviors in college students to be a huge step in the right direction. I commend the schools that are utilizing this theory to promote student wellness. It is time for people to realize that the stereotype of college students being wild binge drinkers is old and worn out.
Although skeptics may believe that the heavy drinkers may not really care what their peers are doing, the results of these studies are far too positive to criticize. Any efforts to reduce the problems associated with binge drinking should be applauded. I can only hope that these efforts will be made with the general public, since many binge drinkers are not college students.
