China Defeats U.S. in Opener

The U.S. lost to China, 1-0, Sunday in an opening game of the 24-nation FIFA World Youth Championship at Mendoza, Argentina.

China scored in the 50th minute to upset a U.S. team that had coasted through qualifying rounds by outscoring its opponents, 11-2.

Bo Qu broke into the penalty area and shrugged off a defender, then drove the ball past U.S. goalkeeper Delvin Countess.

The result leaves the U.S. needing points from its two remaining Group C games--against Chile on Wednesday and Ukraine on Saturday. Ukraine defeated Chile, 4-2, in the other Group C match

“We have two games left and I’m very confident,” U.S. Coach Wolfgang Suhnholz said. “Besides the result, I’m quite happy about our performance today.”

In Group A matches at Buenos Aries, Egypt and Jamaica played to a scoreless tie and host Argentina, which has won the last three World Youth Championships, defeated Finland, 2-0.

In Group B games at Cordoba, Brazil defeated Germany, 2-0 and Iraq routed Canada, 3-0.

Atlanta 3, San Diego 2--Cindy Parlow scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 80th minute, as the Beat defeated the Spirit in front of 6,139 at Atlanta.

Parlow’s second goal, a header off a crossing pass from Nikki Serlenga, snapped a 2-2 tie and gave Atlanta its second consecutive win.

New York 2, Philadelphia 1--Tiffeny Milbrett scored two goals 10 minutes apart in the first half to lead the Power against the Charge in front of 3,104 at Uniondale, N.Y.

Liu Ailing scored in the 60th minute for Philadelphia.

Bay Area 2, Carolina 0--LaKeysia Beene earned her third consecutive shutout as the CyberRays extended their unbeaten streak to three games in front of 6,248 at San Jose.

Julie Murray and Tisha Venturini scored the Bay Area goals.
