From Times Staff Reports

The Ventura County Amateur Radio Society will hold its annual emergency operations practice day at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library on Saturday.

The event, known as a “Field Day,” will allow operators to practice running low-power, two-way radios under a simulated emergency. Operators will communicate with other amateur groups around the world and will be graded on efficiency and knowledge of amateur radio communications. Amateur radio communication is part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s communications plan and is mandated by the International Telecommunications Union. The radios serve as a vital communications link during power outages and disasters.

Library visitors are invited to watch the participants and will be given a chance to talk to other radio stations in other countries.
