Ex-LAUSD Staffer Gets Jail for Scam

A former Los Angeles Unified School District employee was sentenced Tuesday to six months in jail for bribery and embezzlement of public funds stemming from the awarding of LAUSD painting contracts, according to the district attorney’s office.

Billy Joe Simily, 59, of Pasadena pleaded no contest on March 12 to two counts each of bribery and embezzlement, according to Deputy Dist. Atty. Thomas Krag.

A second former employee, Richard Steinfeld, 53, of Apple Valley, also pleaded guilty in March, according to Krag. Steinfeld is scheduled to be sentenced today.

After entering their pleas, the two men each forfeited a Ford Expedition and a Bayliner boat they were given by contractors in exchange for contracts, the district attorney’s office said.
