Donation to Trust Fund Is a Thank-You to Police
In appreciation for police keeping protesters under control during the biotechnology convention here, the group hosting the conference Tuesday donated $25,000 to a fund for the two children of a San Diego officer who was killed in a traffic accident while off duty Saturday.
The donation, accepted by Police Chief David Bejarano, will go to the Mauzy Trust Fund, named for Officer Donna Mauzy, who died in a freeway collision with an alleged drunk driver. The donation was made by the Biotechnology Industry Organization.
Hundreds of officers were deployed to watch protesters during the four-day convention, which ends today, and made 15 arrests.
Mauzy is survived by her husband, Ralph, who is also a San Diego officer, and two teenage sons. San Diego officers have worn black tape over part of their badges since the fatal accident.
