Update--The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is down to 32 teams, but of the five California clubs left standing in the nation’s oldest soccer tournament, recent history is not on the side of the minor league Chico Rooks, the Central Coast Roadrunners or the San Diego Flash. It might, however, favor the San Jose Clash or the Galaxy, who tonight host the Roadrunners and the Nashville Metros, respectively, as they seek to advance to the round of 16. All 12 Major League Soccer teams are taking part in the Open Cup, with the Tampa Bay Mutiny having started things off poorly for MLS by losing to the A-League’s Connecticut Wolves, 3-2, at Veterans’ Memorial Stadium in New Britain, Conn. on Tuesday night. Fourteen more second-round games will be played today, including the Galaxy-Metro match. Los Angeles will be without striker Luis Hernandez because the Mexican striker was red-carded in the team’s 2-1 loss to the eventual champion Chicago Fire in last year’s semifinals.
