The Detroit Pistons acquired forward Clifford Robinson from the Phoenix Suns on Friday for Jud Buechler and John Wallace.

The teams agreed to the trade in principle, but the deal cannot be consummated until July 18 because of salary-cap restrictions.

“We are excited to bring Cliff Robinson to the Pistons,” Detroit President Joe Dumars said in a statement. “He’s a talented veteran player that brings playoff experience and toughness to our roster.”

Robinson averaged 16.4 points last season.

The Suns made the deal a day after saying they are trading point guard Jason Kidd to the New Jersey Nets for Stephon Marbury.

On Friday, Kidd said news of the trade caught him by surprise, even though he heard speculation last season that his days in Arizona were numbered.

The first-team All-NBA point guard believes his arrest in January on a domestic violence charge for striking his wife might have played a part in the Suns’ decision to send him to the Nets.

The Milwaukee Bucks exercised their one-year, $4.65-million option on forward Scott Williams.

Williams averaged 6.1 points and 5.5. rebounds in 66 games last season, his second with Milwaukee.

The Dallas Mavericks exercised a one-year option on reserve forward Eduardo Najera.

Najera averaged 3.3 points and 2.4 rebounds in 10.8 minutes during his rookie season.

The San Antonio Spurs waived fifth-year pro Samaki Walker.

Walker, a 6-foot-9 forward, spent two seasons with the Spurs after signing as a free agent in August 1999. He averaged 5.3 points in 61 games this season.
